The circle of influence

Lessons from Franklin Covey

Things outside of my control:
The News, the weather, the past, death, political issues, social media, world events, the economy and other people's behaviour.

Things I can influence:
My morals, behaviour, reputation, health, choices, actions and reactions, friendships, happiness, productivity, how I treat others, my emotions and my thoughts.

At a recent leadership course, I learnt about Franklin Covey’s circle of influence. The idea is to spend more time working on the areas of your life that you have control. Why not give this a try for yourself.

Think about your circle of influence. These are the elements of your life that you can influence and control. All of the things that are important to you.

Try (if you can) to spend less time thinking about the outside circle of concern, as these are elements that you are less likely to have any control over.

If you do this, your circle of influence will grow, and you should find yourself more positive and happier.
